The College of International Education of Shandong University is a comprehensive institution. It mainly aims to educate people in the Chinese language, culture and customs. Our degree programs are mainly aimed at educating oversea students who will teach Chinese in their home country. The CIE has three departments with their own specialization in Chinese language.

The school’s main focus lies in research of historical Chinese linguistics and culture in cooperation with the Language and Culture Communication Research Center as well as the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban). Shandong University is located in Shandong province which is full of historical culture and is the birth place of Confucius. This offers PhD students unique field research advantages as top experts from all over China come to lecture and do research here. The school has set up a major in language and cultural communication, and is a "985" key project of the Ministry of Education. In China, only the best universities are included in the “985”. Master students can choose between either teaching Chinese as a foreign language or teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages. The latter major has won high praise from the Degree Office of the State Council. The school has also set up a major of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages for undergraduates. The College of International Education has established an education project of “training system for maximizing student’s talents and abilities”, which won a special award from Shandong University for teaching achievements.

The school encourages international exchanges for students to promote cultural and educational understanding. For this reason we have built a platform which enables students to easily study abroad and in many universities in China. We strongly believe that this will broaden students’ understanding of China and help China to understand the world better. What’s more, relying on national “International Chinese Teacher Volunteer Program” and the overseas Confucius Institute, the school provides the students with opportunities to gain experience within China and abroad in our partner institutes. The school has sent more than 600 students to 17 countries including France, Australia, the Netherlands and Thailand.

There are many different students who come here to study, including language studies. The school cooperates with a variety of scholarships. It undertakes the international students’ Chinese language study at Shandong University. In the meantime, it undertakes international projects supported by a Chinese government scholarship, China Development Bank Scholarship, Confucius Institute Scholarship, China Study Program, China-Oman Friendly Exchange Scholarship, etc. The number of students at the school is increasing year by year, and its education quality is among the best in China.
