The College of International Education at Shandong University is a comprehensive educational institution primarily focused on training professionals in international Chinese education, educating international students, and training Chinese language teachers both domestically and abroad. The college consists of departments such as the Department of International Chinese Education and the International Chinese Teaching Center. It is committed to cultivating professionals capable of telling China's story using an international discourse and developing high-level talents for global language education and cultural communication. The college is affiliated with the Institute for Advanced Studies in Education, the Center for Research and Experience of Traditional Chinese Culture, and the Research Center for Language and Cultural Communication. Additionally, it plays a key role in the development of Shandong University’s overseas Confucius Institutes.
The college has an integrated academic structure spanning undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs. At the undergraduate level, it offers a major in International Chinese Education. For postgraduate studies, it provides an academic master’s program in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and a professional master’s program in International Chinese Education. The college has established a seamless connection between undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral education. Its undergraduate program in International Chinese Education has been recognized as a National First-Class Undergraduate Program.
The faculty of the college is an interdisciplinary team characterized by strong international expertise, diverse academic backgrounds, and comprehensive knowledge structures. Among them, 93% hold doctoral degrees, and 84% have overseas experience. The faculty engages in applied research, fundamental research, and think-tank studies, emphasizing interdisciplinary, international, and open academic research. The teaching team has outstanding instructional skills, having won first prize in the Shandong Provincial University Teaching Competition for four consecutive years. Many faculty members have also been honored with Shandong Province Ideology and Politics Teaching Expert Award, Shandong University Teaching Expert Award, Excellent Teaching Award, and Outstanding Educator Award.
The college operates several national-level platforms, including the "National Base for the Promotion of Standardized Chinese Language and Characters," the "National Base for Traditional Culture Education for University Students," and the "Ministry of Education’s First Batch of Bases for International Chinese Promotion." Additionally, it has established provincial-level platforms such as the "Shandong International Culture Communication Base for Overseas Chinese," the "Shandong Province Experimental Teaching and Demonstration Center for International Chinese Education," and the "Shandong Province International Chinese Education Research Association." The college has also developed collaborative platforms, such as the "International Chinese Education Digital Talent Training and Practice Base," the "Virtual Teaching and Research Office of International Medical Chinese Education Collaborative Innovation Center," the "Neurocognitive Science Joint Laboratory of Shandong University International Chinese Education," and the "Shandong University Joint Laboratory for Traditional Culture Creative Transformation, Innovative Development, and International Communication." These platforms actively contribute to talent cultivation, scientific research, industry-education integration, educational development, teachers’ development and social service.
The college adheres to a student-centered educational philosophy, implementing the Kunpeng program for outstanding domestic and international students. It emphasizes enhancing students' knowledge foundations and comprehensive qualities, fostering self-sustaining talent development in international Chinese education. The college actively explores innovative models for international talent cultivation and has built an extensive global cooperation network. It has established collaborative agreements with 21 universities across 15 countries, including the United States, Australia, Russia, France, and Japan. The college also conducts joint student training and academic exchanges with institutions such as the University of Queensland (Australia), Cardiff University (UK), Brittany School of Business (France), Tohoku University (Japan), and Yonsei University (South Korea).
