Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages

1.Introduction:

Abbreviated toMTCSOL,Master ofTeaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languagesis for thoseoverseas students in China. The graduate degree courses are designed to cultivate students into professional talents dedicated to promote the Chinese language worldwide. The establishment of the degree helps toreform and improve the training system of Shandong University for Chinese international education professionals. The degree, mainly based on practice, is a professional degree.

2.Admission and Enrollment

(1)Admission Object:

We are expecting non-Chinese citizens in good health, aged between 16 and 35, (16-45 if you are a Chinese language teacher in-post), who love the Chinese language and culture, aspire to working in Chinese language education, teaching and international promotion of Chinese. You are required to have a bachelor's degree and a high Chinese language proficiency and be excellent both in conduct and academic performance.

NOTE:

For those applicants who now register as students, an officially-issued pre-graduation certificate is necessary. And after you have been admitted, the original diploma is required at the time of registration. Students who fail to show it will be disqualified.

For those who were originally Chinese citizens and later accepted a foreign nationality, Shandong University decides accordingly based on the direction of the Ministry of Education for foreign students [2009] No. 83.

(2)Entry Requirements:

I. Chinese Language Requirements:

*Bachelor’s degree in Chinese;

*A Chinese level Equivalent to HSK level 5 (180 points).

*Pass the Chinese proficiency test arranged by the college

If your Chinese proficiency does not meet these requirements, a self-financed language tuition is compulsory before taking the professional courses.

II. Application Materials:

lA Scanned Copy of Passport;

lHSK and HSKK Report (valid for two years);

lValid Highest Education Certificate (Graduation Expectation Certificate)

lTranscripts of Academic Records;

lResearch Plan

lMedical Examination Form;

lTwo letters of recommendation by professors or associate professors (in Chinese or English);

lIn-post Certificate and recommendation letter issued by the institute you work for (for applicants who are in-post Chinese language teachers)

3.Cultivating Objectives:

Cultivate our students into specialized talents who understand and are familiar with China and Chinese culture. With great intercultural communication capacity, they will be relatively competent in the Chinese language and culture teaching, and are qualified for Chinese teaching tasks.

The specific requirements are:

1. Good professional quality and ethics;

2. Proficient Chinese teaching skills;

3. Not only a good understanding of Chinese culture but a comprehensive perception of cultural intermediation;

4. Good cross-cultural communication skills;

5. Capabilities in Organizing, Managing and Coordinating Language and Culture Projects.

4.Cultivating Plan:

(1)Academic Year

Two years of schooling. The first year the main focus of the students will lie in course learning while the last year will be spent in practices and fieldworks.

(2)Cultivating Mode:

We combine both theoretical learning and practical teaching in educationwith a focus on case analysis;

A dual tutor system is applied by integrating the guidance of both intramural and extramural academic advisors. Students will mostly be instructed by their intramural academic advisors; for teaching practice and thesis writing however by their extramural academic advisors.

(3)Credit (Period) & Courses

There are 35 credits in total, including 28 compulsory credits and 7 optional credits.

※Compulsory courses: Overview of China; Chinese Linguistics; Introduction to Chinese International Education; Introduction to Second Language Acquisition; Case Analysis and Teaching Design In Context of Chinese Classroom; Chinese Cultural Communication; Ancient China; Modern Chinese; Ancient Chinese Literature; Special lectures on International Education of China; Chinese Proficiency Test; Experience Activities of Chinese Culture and Cultural Exchange between China and the world; Teaching Practices

※Optional Courses: Chinese Language Teaching Method; Chinese Teaching Grammar and Error Analysis; Teaching Resources and Educational Technology; Language Testing Methods and Applications; Chinese Higher Education; Chinese Culture Talents.

(4) Master’s Dissertation

The selected topic of the dissertation should be closely related to the practice of Chinese international education with certain application values. The form of the thesis could be applied basic research, research report, teaching experiment report, typical case analysis, teaching design, project management and so on.

The dissertation must be completed independently, reflecting the ability of postgraduates to apply scientific theories, methods and techniques to solve practical problems. The number of characters in a dissertation is generally no less than 10,000 words.

(5)Professional Practice:

Professional practice is mainly done through the teaching internship. Internships are generally arranged from the end of the third semester to the beginning of the fourth semester, with 32 classes and 2 credits.

Students are required to conduct their teaching internships at various schools and educational institutions at home and abroad. During the internship, they should accomplish a complete teaching task of a certain course like Chinese or Chinese Culture. During the internship, you will be guided by your supervisor. And afterwards, Graduate students are required to submit an internship plan, an internship summary and an internship report with evaluations from the employer.

(6)Graduation & Degree:

Upon the completion of the postgraduate period, students will be awarded a graduation certificate of Shandong University, but only when the student meets the following requirements:

Adequate credits and grades required by the training plan;

Required practices, fieldworks and a qualified dissertation that passes the graduation thesis defense;

After deliberation and approval of the official degree evaluation committee in SDU, the candidate will be awarded a professional master's degree of Chinese International Education.
