I.Program Overview
Relying on the high-quality educational resources, this International Student Undergraduate Preparatory Program provides six-month to one-year training for graduated high school students who are interested in embarking on an undergraduate study at SDU.
II.Aim of the Program
1.In addition to the language learning, students will gain a general knowledge on the basic subjects.
2.Generally, the goal is to pass the HSK Level 3 exam (270 points) after half a year or pass the HSK Level 4 exam (210 points) after one year.
3.The other basic subjects will enable students to have a solid foundation when commencing their undergraduate studies.
III. Eligibility
1. General Requirements
(1)Applicants must be physically and mentally healthy, friendly to China, have no criminal record, and be non-Chinese citizens holding a valid regular foreign passport.
(2)Applicants must possess a high school diploma or above.
2.Language proficiency requirements
If an applicant wants to study this program for one academic year (starting in September 2025), no Chinese language proficiency is required. If an applicant wants to study this program for only one semester (starting in February 2026), an official HSK Level 3 certificate is required with a score of over 180.
3.Applicants must meet the criteria specified in the Notice by the Ministry of Education of Regulating Admission of International Students to China's Higher Education Institutions (Letter No. 12 [2020] of the Ministry of Education).
IV. Application Time
1.One Year Study (September 2025 - July 2026), the application time is from March 15, 2025 to June 15, 2025.
2.One Semester Study (February 2026 - July 2026), the application time is from October 15, 2025 to December 31, 2025.
Note: After the application deadline, no supplementary materials will be accepted. Applicants are advised to complete their applications at least two weeks before the deadline.
V. Courses Setting and Prospective Bachelor Program
1. Preparatory Program
The courses are divided into two parts: the main courses and the auxiliary courses. The main courses include two main sections: language strengthening and major preparation, which effectively connect language skill improvement and major knowledge learning. The auxiliary courses include courses such as professional Chinese language improvement, HSK skill training, which further enhance students’ language and cultural communication abilities and improve students’ comprehensive ability for studying at Chinese universities.
The course titles are as follows:
(1)Intensive Chinese Language: Comprehensive Chinese, Comprehensive Training, Comprehensive Practice, Chinese Characters and Reading, Chinese Vocabulary and Grammar, etc.
(2)Major Preparation Courses: Preparatory Mathematics, Preparatory Chemistry, etc.
(3)Professional Chinese Language: Medical Chinese, Business Chinese, etc.
(4)HSK Skill Training: HSK Listening, Vocabulary and Reading, Grammar and Writing, etc.
2. Prospective Bachelor Program
Students participating in the 2025 undergraduate preparatory program can apply for undergraduate study at Shandong University in 2026. Because the 2026 undergraduate majors for international students have not yet been released, please refer to the major lists provided in 2025 Application Instructions for International Students (Bachelor Programs) at Shandong University.
VI.Application Method
Please visit Shandong University Application System for International Students (http://www.apply.sdu.edu.cn) to register an account and complete the application. Hard copies of application documents are not needed.
VII.Application Documents
Applicants are required to ensure the authenticity and accuracy of the provided application information and materials. If the application information and materials are verified to be untrue, the applicant's application, admission, or enrollment qualification will be canceled.
1.Personal information page of the passport (regular personal passport valid beyond March 1, 2026);
2.High school diploma or equivalent or pre-graduation certification (the pre-graduation certificate must be stamped with the school seal, indicating the expected graduation date, and the graduation certificate must be obtained before the registration date of the corresponding year);
3.Transcripts of all high school courses (stamped with the
school seal);
4.Letter of motivation in Chinese or English;

5.Language proficiency certificate;
Applicants applying for one semester (starting in February 2026), an official HSK Level 3 certificate is required with a score of over 180. The language certificate must be within the validity period (within two years after issue) at the time of application. If applicants provide Chinese language certificate, it is required to be signed by the relevant responsible person and stamped with the school seal.
6.Foreigner Physical Examination Form;
Applicants should undergo the examination strictly according to the required items stated in the Foreigner Physical Examination
Form (please download the template from: https://www.istudy.sdu.edu.cn/English/Home.htm - "Download"). Forms will be deemed invalid if they are incomplete, lack attached photos, do not have a cross-page seal on the photo, lack a signature of the attending physician, or are without an official hospital stamp.
Please ensure the physical examination remains valid during the application as the result is valid for only 6 months.
7.Certificate of No Criminal Record;
Applicants must submit the Certificate of No Criminal Record issued by local public security management department. It should be valid within 6 months prior to the application date.
8.Scanned copies of the financial guarantee materials, including: (1) Scanned copies of passport or identification document of the financial guarantor (limited to the applicant or immediate family member); (2) Proof of financial support, with deposits of no less than 50,000 RMB or an equivalent amount in foreign currency;
9.If you are studying at another university in Chinese mainland, please submit a recommendation letter issued by the International Students Office or the school of your host university with their contact information.
10.Applicants under the age of 18 must submit scanned copies of the following documents:
(1)Guardian statement (please download the template from: https://www.istudy.sdu.edu.cn/English/Home.htm - "Download"). The guardian must be an adult living in Shandong Province, China;
(2)A notarized paper to prove that the applicant's parents have entrusted guardianship to the guardian;
(3)The guardian's ID or passport.
11. Additional supplementary documents required by Shandong University.
Note: All application documents must be in Chinese or English. If the documents are in other languages, the original document and a certified translation in English or Chinese must be uploaded together. Please use a scanner to scan the relevant documents in color, as documents taken with mobile phones or cameras, as well as photocopies, will not be accepted. Except for the "Foreigner Physical Examination Form" and personal signatures, handwritten documents will not be accepted.
VIII.Evaluation and Admission
Shandong University will select the best applicants for admission. Video interviews can be a part of the application process for some cases. Admission results can be checked through the SDU Online Application System for International Students. The application results for study in fall will be declared before July 30, 2025, and the results for study in next spring will be declared before January 30, 2026. Shandong University will issue an electronic admission letter and the Confirmation Form for Study in China (JW202) or Short-term International Student's Information Form (DQ) to the admitted students.
IX.Registration
Admitted students are required to register at Shandong University according to the date stated in the admission letter. Upon registration, the original graduation certificate, language proficiency certificate, Foreigner Physical Examination Form and other required documents will be verified. Those failing to submit the corresponding certificates will be disqualified from enrollment.
X.Fees
1.Application fee: 400 RMB/person (Please pay the application fee after receiving the pre-admission email. Once the application fee is paid, it will be non-refundable.);
2.Tuition fee: 11,000 RMB/semester, 22,000 RMB/year;
3.Medical insurance fee: 400 RMB/person/semester, 800 RMB/person/year. Failure to purchase the required medical insurance for international students studying in China will result in the inability to complete the registration procedures at the university.
4.Accommodation fee: Varied based on the room type, typically ranging from 23 to 45 RMB/person/day.
XI.Scholarship
Eligible applicants may apply for Jinan Sister City Scholarship. After the preparatory program, international students who have received excellent scores can obtain priority admission to an undergraduate program at SDU. When applying for undergraduate majors, outstanding international students can apply for Chinese Government Scholarship, Shandong University Scholarship for Outstanding International Students, or Jinan Sister City Scholarship. Students who apply for the major of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages can apply for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship.
XII.Visa
Admitted students must take the electronic version of the admission letter and the Confirmation Form for Study in China (JW202) or Short-term International Student's Information Form (DQ) to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate abroad to apply for a study visa. International students studying in China for up to 6 months should apply for an X2 visa. Those studying for more than 6 months should apply for an X1 visa and apply for a residence permit within 30 days after arriving in China.
